Our History

Our History

In 1992 businessman Douglas M. Schair funded a charitable private family foundation with the goal of supporting Maine-based organizations.

Doug found success in the insurance industry and privately supported a number of non-profits but wanted to expand his philanthropic scope as well as include his children and family members in the philanthropic decision-making process.

In January 2005, Doug contracted bacterial meningitis and died at the age of 59. The Hudson Foundation, named for one of Doug’s favorite cars, the Hudson Hornet, continues to support Maine non-profits focused mainly, but not exclusively, in the areas of education, social services, anti-bias work, and Jewish services. The board consists of his four grown children, his niece, and his grandson.
